Best insight to draw closer to one's Creator-Singularity, יְהוָׂה/Existant, is to realize that Creation—Nature/Natural—is the Best (and Only) Projection of Our Creator-Singularity possible/accessible to any mortal—ever! Of course, the world knows the Study of the Immutable Natural, Discrete Logic, by the name science or physics. (Unfortunately, mediocre scientists regularly confuse the distinction between the science and the models, whether.)
In this DërꞋëkh, יְהוָׂה has, "left a Trail" that each mortal has been endowed with the capacity to follow! Clearly, harmonizing & aligning oneself with the Immutable, אמת and צֶ֣דֶק of Nature/Reality is the only reliable DërꞋëkh יְהוָׂה!!! The Corollary is that the sacrifice of אמת or צֶ֣דֶק is at the root of every (properly understood, interpreted and translated) transgression against the Principles for which Avᵊrã•hãm and Mōsh•ëh´ stood: the ONLY PROPER interpretations of Tōr•ãhꞋ! This is what, to the limits of their ancient knowledge, Avᵊrã•hãm, Mōsh•ëh´, the Nᵊviy•imꞋ, the sō•phᵊr•imꞋ, Rav Hi•leil´ ha-Za•qein´ (Sr.) ha-Nãs•iꞋ (≈BCE 30 to 10 CE) and Riy״by
were doing their utmost to convey!
You have just discerned the Ta•n״kh phrase: dã•vãrꞋ פָּנִ֣ים אֶל־פָּנִ֔ים (Shᵊm•ōtꞋ 33:11; bᵊMi•dᵊbarꞋ 12:8).
Since physicomorphism persists today, it can be no surprise that it was even more prevalent during the BCE mid-2ⁿᵈ millennium, as well as during the period of scribal codification of Ta•n״kh. Fables of supernatural aside, Mōsh•ëh´ described perception of the Creator as one often hears today, "God spoke to me…" We would know better than to ask to hear the recording. The speaker clearly meant that the s/he percieved a bat qōl and interpreted that bat qōl to be god.
In the BCE mid-2ⁿᵈ millennium, physicomorphism was far more extant. Rumblings, or frequent lightning & thunder, from a mountain were perceived as a holy mountain; lightning the presence (pan•imꞋ) of a god, thunder the voice. Yet, the intelligent sapien of today recognizes that these were natural events misperceived as Ta•n״kh-prohibited physicomorphisms! This basic recognition brings Ta•n״kh, and יְהוָׂה/Creator-Singularity, into the Light of Reality rather than the silly fables previously thought by Flintstone-era thinking.
An …(o)mancy is a divination — by a "diviner"/medium, of an esoterically/mystically divined physical object (ergo, a subset of physicomorphism), which claims to be the result of a symbolic connection to an esoteric "divine" truth.
Aeromancy — from Greek ἀερομαντεία; divination of atmospheric signs, winds, breezes, gusts
Anaeidolomancy — from Greek ἀναειδωλομαντεία (anꞋa•eiꞋdōl•o•man•teiꞋa): ἀνά‑ (ana‑, “up, again, back, forth, through”; i.e. again/bringing‑forth) + εἴδωλον (eiꞋdō•lon; image, apparition, idol + μαντεία (man•teiꞋa, “divination, prophecy” (contrast with Nã•viꞋ!); "‑mancy". Ergo, “divination by bringing forth images”, that is, divining images of a ficitonal physical face/body of a non-physical noophrone
, is clearly impossible and false! The classic example: the Excised-Apostate Hellenist Paul's anaeidolomancy/identity-theft:
"divining/"Epiphany" en route to Yᵊrū•shã•laꞋyim, from the world's first & original 7 Christian churches in Turkey), via Damascus
Road [Πραξεις Αποστολων {"Acts"} 11.19-26] — specifically, Jesus Christ/Yësh"u & its demigod pantheon-family, each an anaeidolomancy + identity-theft by the Excised-Apostate Hellenist Paul). Each constituted a separate pëshꞋa anthropomorphosis:
equating mortal (physical) faces to a noophrone (see related eidololatria.
Anaeidolomancy, coined here of necessity, describes this particular divination ("-mancy") of the artists'-created mentally-concocted image(s) of some supposed god. Originally, only from such a "divined" mental image of a god could these mystical/esoteric supposedly-supernatural, Tōr•ãhꞋ-forbidden pictures, tᵊrãph•imꞋ, assorted amulets & idols be fashioned. The"authorized clergy" of "holy-priests" then required their flock/herd to believe (have faith) that their god inhabited the object—a kind of branch-outlet of their god!
This "sacred/holy" god-"spirit" was thus, by faith in, believed [in contrast to Immutable-Natural logic/reality] to power-up the "sacred/holy" god-object(s) with special supernatural—override "god-power", to overrule, overturn and reverse the Immutable Singularity Creator's Natural; i.e. reality! Consequently, this supposed-supernatural "god" evoked particular respect/fear in "believers" having "faith". Thereafter, the "sacred-power" object was unwarrantedly regarded as unlike plain objects! No different from cave-era "religion", no different from today's "religions"!!! Always intractably incompatible with Creator-Singularity יְהוָׂה/Existant!
More accurately, excluding the mental divination from the worship of the resulting products (idolatry), appeared to excuse the makers of these objects from the Tōr•ãhꞋ-prohibition, which, as a result, then, Hellenists contended, applied only against the worship alone—"idolatry", but not the divining of the images.
Indeed, the resulting assimilation, in Hellenized LXX, resulted in the consequent omission of the prohibition of divining, thereafter distinct from the remaining, narrowed prohibition, solely against idol-worship in subsequent "Jewish Tradition"!
This is only one of the many glaring examples of Hellenization embedded in the publication of Hellenist LXX! Consequently, post-LXX Jewish Tradition permitted the divining & production of art, pictures, tᵊrãph•imꞋ, other amulets & sculptures/idols of false gods as no more than Idols for Goy•imꞋ/Infidels. (This is not only a double transgression of Tōr•ãhꞋ (the divination of images of god, and, no less importantly, a false distinction that, only appears to distinguish between a "Chosen Race-People" of "Jews" and "goy•imꞋ", whereas, goy•imꞋ simply means "peoples"—"Jews" included!
So, Jews ARE goy•imꞋ too—just like the rest of humankind, each created by the only Creator!!!
The resulting "Jewish Tradition" of Jews claiming preference as "the Chosen Race/People", allowed to create and fashion idols while "goy•imꞋ" cannot, expanded into a long Hellenist litany of similar privileges inherited by Hellenist Jews—since claimed by all Orthodox & Kha•ræd•imꞋ Jews—based exclusively in Hellenized in LXX, as a race, above "goy•imꞋ"! I maintain that these assimilations are the greatest of all other causes of miso-Judaism together! Anti-Semite-ism
is an ignorant misnomer own-error that contradicts our own after-the-fact "'splainin'" (Hebrew: הַסְבָּרָה "hasbara") & safety.
Arithomancy (Greek: ἀριθμός arithmos “number” + μαντεία manteia “divination”) — divination—mysticism/esoterics—by numbers or numerical patterns (e.g., Gematria). Distinguished from logical, mathematical statistics and encryption/decryption.
Augurmancy from Latin: augur, auguris (masc.) — official Roman omen‑interpreter; likely of uncertain Italic/Etruscan origin, not Greek. Common derivation: Latin augēre “to increase” sometimes cited but etymology is debated; many scholars favor an Etruscan loan or Italic substrate.
Augur + Greek ending for simplicity & consistency in English: -μαντεία -manteía for "-mancy".
Augury/omen‑reading; divination by observing signs, omens.
(Prodigies (bird‑flight, natural portents, unusual occurrences, and the like often qualify as a natural cause having a logically predictable effect: thus, not an augurmancy.)
Chiromancy: Greek: χείρ (kheír) “hand” + μαντεία (manteía) “divination”; kheiromantía; modern: palm reading, palmistry.
Astrologomancy — divination of stars/heavens (astrology) — astromancy / astrologomancy (ἀστρομαντεία / ἀστρολογομαντεία, astro‑ + -manteia). Distinguished from the logic
of astronomy.
Cartomancy (καρτομαντεία, κάρτα kárta‑ “card” + -μαντεία -manteía; divination) — divination of cards (tarot, playing cards, oracle cards, etc.).
Cleromancy (κληρομαντεία, κληρο- klæros‑ casting of objects + -μαντεία -manteia; divination) — divination of pattern of cast stones, etc.
Be aware of the difference whether viewing a "cast of lots" is claimed to be a "divine(d) answer" or a mortal means to resolve a matter that must be decided but the answer is beyond mortal reach (e.g., the nation must decide a critical matter in cases when no one can determine אמת, therefore, צֶ֣דֶק is impossible to decide. "Casting of lots", in accordance with Ta•n״kh, was like flipping a coin today. Nothing mystical of "divine", just decide and move on. Cleromancy (κληρομαντεία) — divination of lots, casts, dice, draw straws or cards, etc. (as contrasted with the case when a logically impartial decision is required but אמת & צדק are beyond mortal means.
Eidololatria (Εἰδωλολατρία, ei•dōl•o•la•triꞋa), εἰδωλο (eiꞋdōl•o-, idol) + λατρία (la•triꞋa, cultic worship, devotion — cultic worship of images/idols. The Hellenized in LXX Greek translators often render Hebrew terms by loaning or adapting words implying idol worship (εἰδωλολατρία) rather than a technical term for image‑evocation. Thus, anaeidolomancy would have been an unacceptable affront to Hellenists (which includes the later Romans). Thus, it's most likely that Hellenist Jews deliberately narrowed the prohibition against divining (-mancy) to eidololatria, worshipping images of any kind—thus, mistranslating into "permission" to practice anaeidolomancy!!! That would explain eidololatria being translated accurately in this particular case; cover for continuing anaeidolomancy— divining images into "gods" via drawing, painting, carving & chiseling—for profit! In fact, however, it is impossible to even imagine a physical manifestation of a non‑physical being! (See related anaeidolomancy)
Geomancy (γεωμαντεία geōmanteia) divination of geographic features, markings on the ground, or the patterns formed by soil, rocks, sand or ley lines. Contrast with its logical counterpart: following a trail by reading footprints, discarded trash, broken twigs, bent grass, etc.
Haruspicomancy — Haruspicomancy (ἁρυσπικομαντεία / ἁρυσπικoμαντεία, ἡρούσπικον? — from Latin haruspicina “divination by entrails” ← Etruscan haruspex (“entrails‑seer”)?) — divination by inspection of animal entrails/organs.
Hydromancy — (ὑδρομαντεία, ὕδωρ ūdōr‑ “water” + -μαντεία -manteía; translit: ūdromantía; again, uppercase Greek ὑ (ū), Greek uppercase Ὑ (Latin/English Ū) misread by non-Greeks as Latin/English "Y" — divination by water (ripples, reflections, sounds, or submerged visions).
Logomancy (λογομαντεία, λόγος lógos‑ “word, speech” + -μαντεία -manteía; divination) — divination centered on the divine pronunciation or chant of a Word (Logos) or words, names, or spoken/written phrases; e.g., interpreting chance words, glossolalia, or bibliomantic readings focused on wording); an epistemic/ritual category — practices using words/letters for divination, interpretation, or influence.
Logopoietomancy (λογοποιετομαντεία, λόγος lógos‑ “word” + ποίεσις poíesis‑ “making” + -μαντεία -manteía; divination) — divination by words one creates or composes (invented names, spontaneous verses, or crafted phrases used as omens). A performative/ontological concept — speech as a causal creative force: the act or power of creating or bringing into being by uttering a word; creation by speech, creatio ex verbo; “divinatory/ritual practice of creating a physical object by speaking a word or words (e.g., chanting)”—attempting to imitate bᵊ-Ræsh•itꞋ 1.3ff.
Onomancy — (ονομαμαντεία / ὀνομαμαντεία, ὄνομα ónoma‑ “name” + -μαντεία -manteía; divination) — divination by names (analysis or interpretation of personal names, place‑names, or names found in texts as omens); name-focused divination—names of people, angels, etc.
— whether physically written (on physical paper with a physical implement) or spoken (by a physical mortal, with physical vocal cords via physical sound waves through a physical atmosphere) — is a subset of physicomorphism—attributing divine powers—separate from non-physical Existant—to physical things, even spoken words (e.g., logomancy—chants/enchanting/wizardry, sorcery/witchcraft)! This has also been even more flagrant as logopoietomancy! Not appreciably different from the time of Har Sin•aiꞋ, despite leading other religions, remain sucklings of many pre-sapien physicomorphisms, in dire need of weaning from physicomorphism still today—that need to be thoroughly burned, ground into powder, scattered on Yãm Ki•nërꞋët and "Orthodox QaꞋbãl•ist Jews required to boil & drink it!
If it's physical it is a creation, not the Creator!
Tᵊhil•imꞋ 20.1 — יְ֝שַׂגֶּבְךָ֗ שֵׁ֤ם ׀ אֱלֹהֵ֬י יַעֲקֹֽב׃ (May the [Singularity, then known only by the] name
"gods of Ya•a•qōvꞋ",
safe-house
you. Not an onomancy.
Mi•shᵊl•æꞋ ShᵊlōmꞋōh 18.10 — מִגְדַּל־עֹ֭ז שֵׁ֣ם יְהֹוָ֑ה; into-it־runs
a צַדִּ֣יק — וְנִשְׂגָּֽב. Not an onomancy.
Post- BCE 169 ( Σελευκιδῶν SãꞋtrap An•tiꞋ•ökh•ös ö Ëp•i•phan•æsꞋ' death-decree on anyone who uttered the name of a non-Hellenist god!
Prior to that decree, Yi•sᵊr•ã•æl´ had been required, if summoned to testify in court, to testify under oath "in the Name of יְהוָׂה"—no substitute! It was false testimony "in the Name of יְהוָׂה" that was prohibited!!!
To the day, the death-decree of Σελευκιδῶν SãꞋtrap An•tiꞋ•ökh•ös ö Ëp•i•phan•æsꞋ in BCE 169 marks the exact time that uttering "the Name" became prohibited for Yi•sᵊr•ã•eil´! Only later did the rabbis concoct and rationalize their own (Tōr•ãhꞋ-forbidden) occult onomancy and plagiarize credit for it! Now that's their story and they're going to stick to it.
Nᵊkhëm•yãhꞋ 9.5 — Communal blessing is, tellingly, broken into 2 parts:
ק֗וּמוּ, בָּרְכוּ֙ אֶת יְהוָׂה־אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם מִן־הָעוֹלָ֖ם עַד־הָעוֹלָ֖ם
(Stand
, bless יְהוָׂה, your gods, from hã-ō•lamᵊ to hã-ō•lamᵊ.)
Part A clearly demonstrates the ancient practice, long in place, before Antiokhos' decree and after BCE 160! During the period the decree was enforced, however, it would clearly have resulted in the kohanicide of the kō•han•imꞋ! (During the period of enforcement of Antiokhos' decree, temporary suspension of this mi•tzᵊwãhꞋ was covered by the Principle of Pi•quꞋakh NëphꞋësh.)
Part B clearly demonstrates the practice subsequent to enforcement of the Antiokhos decree, but having assimilated chronic rabbinic and kohanic assimilations, taught to the Yᵊhūd•imꞋ, that endure today: onomancy assimilated during the evil decree of Antiokhos. This refrain, repeated by the ordinary Yᵊhūd•imꞋ, substituted a (another) shæm — namely the vanilla and Hellenist-friendly, "our Lords",
— in place of יְהוָׂה!
וִיבָֽרְכוּ֙ שֵׁ֣ם כְּבֹדֶ֔ךָ וּמְרוֹמַ֥ם עַל־כָּל־בְּרָכָ֖ה וּתְהִלָּֽה׃
(Then let them bless "a Name" that is honored and elevated over every blessing and praise.) In English, modern Jews prefer to translate "the Name". Nevertheless, it was Hellenized vanilla back in BCE 169.
This was literal life or death instruction relieving Yᵊhūd•imꞋ of vocalizing יְהוָׂה by the provision of pi•quꞋakh nëphꞋësh, of necessity issued immediately after the issuance of the decree by Σελευκιδῶν SãꞋtrap An•tiꞋ•ökh•ös ö Ëp•i•phan•æsꞋ—in BCE 169!
This reflects a post-decree adjustment that tells us that, already by this time, rabbis had, under the aegis of pi•quꞋakh nëphꞋësh, incorporated the practice of reciting שֵׁם rather than יְהוָׂה during the previous period of the decree. But Part B further tells us that after the decree had passed, rabbinic mystics had fully assimilated onamancy of "the Name"! Only the kō•han•imꞋ now pronounced the Name. The congregation echoing the refrain still substitute the Hellenized vanilla substitute "a Name"!
Σελευκιδῶν SãꞋtrap An•tiꞋ•ökh•ös ö Ëp•i•phan•æsꞋ' decree effectively ceased to be enforced by BCE 164–160:
(On modern calendar) BCE 165.12.20: יְהוּדָה הַמַּכַּבִּי בֶּן מַתִּתְיָה הַכֹּהֵן (YᵊhūdꞋãh ha-Ma•kabꞋi bën-Ma•tiꞋtᵊyãh va-KōꞋhæn) recaptured and purified the Hellenized Temple (from ≈BCE 37 of Herod); Seleucid control weakened.
BCE 164: news of Antiochus IV’s death; Lysias negotiated with the Ma•kabꞋim Maccabees and “repealed” the anti-Jewish decrees (Ma•kabꞋim A/ later sources).
By BCE 162–160 Lysias (and later Së•lë•ū•kid•ōnꞋ-Syrian commanders like Bak•ᵏhiꞋdæs) confirmed amnesties and restored Jewish rights; subsequent Së•lë•ū•kid•ōnꞋ treaties formally allowed Jewish practice.
So the decrees against uttering the name of any non-Hellenist god ended after the Ma•kab•imꞋ victories and Lysias’s agreement (BCE 164–162), with BCE 164 usually cited as the turning point (BCE 160 latest).
'The Name' has been, since soon after BCE 169, and continues to be today, regarded as apotropaic formula throughout nearly all of the Jewish community—most flagrantly: QaꞋbãl•ists/Sha"s!
Classical rabbinic sources (Talmud—"Study" [Yᵊrushalmi ≈350 CE, Bavli ≈500 CE], Midrash—"Inquiry" [fm ≈300 to ≈1000 CE]) include protective uses of Psalms and verses; while not explicit on this exact verse, the broader practice gives it precedent.
Rabbinic/medieval (from the 5ᵗʰ to the late 15ᵗʰ -century CE) pietists (e.g., Yehuda Halevi, Rishonim who discuss segulot — protective practices) and later chasidic authorities incorporate verses and Divine names as protective formulas.
Kabbalists (e.g., Lurianic (1534-1572 CE) and earlier medieval Kabbalah) treat Divine names and verses as spiritually efficacious; Proverbs 18:10 ("The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and are safe") is used in amuletic, meditative, and protective contexts.
Orthodox lay practice: many traditional communities recite or inscribe verses (including Prov 18:10) on amulets or in prayers as segulot).
Gematria from Hebrew גְּמָטְרְיָא or via Aramaic/Greek influence; root unclear; transliterated from Greek Γεωμετρία (γεωμετρία, γῆ gæ‑ “earth” + μέτρον mëꞋtron‑ “measure”; geometría); alphanumeric divination assigning numeric values to Hebrew letters to derive meanings, correspondences, and omens (e.g., equating words with same numeric value).
Notarikon (νοταρίκον, Latin notarīcōn ← Latin notarius “notary” < notāre “to mark, note” — method of deriving meaning by expanding or contracting words into acronyms, initials or forming words from initials (acrostic/abbreviation divining technique).
Temurah תְּמוּרָה tᵊmūrꞋãh, exchange, substitution; root: נמר/מרר “change” — QaꞋbãl•ist method of permutation, substitution or transposition of Hebrew letters to derive alternate words and divine esoteric meanings.
Mantimancy (μαντιμαντεία, mantimanteia) — divining of divination: future-seers, fore(tune)-tellers/seers/soothsayers & English "prophet" ≢ Hebrew Nã•viꞋ (see Nã•viꞋ link).
Necromancy — νεκρομαντεία (νεκρός nekrós‑ “dead” + -μαντεία -manteía; — divination or communication with the dead (spirit invocation, mediumship, using corpses, autopsies or necromantic rites).
Oinomancy (οἰνομαντεία) — (οινομαντεία, οἶνος oînos‑ “wine” + -μαντεία -manteía) — divination of wine (observing color, sediment, taste, patterns, or using wine as a scrying medium).
Oionomancy, (incorrectly Greek back-derived from Latin). See correct: Augurymancy. Further, oionomancy is easily confused with oinomancy (see link).
Oneiromancy — ὀνειρομαντεία (ὄνειρος óneiros‑ “dream” + -μαντεία -manteía) — divination of dreams; interpretation of dreams as omens or messages. Note:
Onomancy ὀνομαμαντεία; ὄνομα ónoma‑ “name” + -μαντεία -manteía; divination) — divination by names (analysis or interpretation of personal names, place‑names, or names found in texts as omens). Biggest of all violators: Khab"d QaꞋbãl•ists onomancing the Name יְהוָׂה!!! Yeah, calling it like it is! Deal with it! Straighten up and conform to the Principles that
Ophiomancy (ὀφιομαντεία) — divination of snakes
Osteomancy (not scapulomancy) — divination of bones — osteomancy (ὀστεομαντεία) / Scapulomancy — divination of shoulder blades (scapula) — scapulamancy (Latin/Greek blend)
pharmakomancy (φαρμακομαντεία) — divination under influence of drugs/poisons (pharmakō‑ + -manteia);
Phytomancy (φυτομαντεία) — divination of plants/leaves (e.g., reading tea-leaves after subject drinks tea
Psychomancy — ψυχομαντεία (psūkho•manteia), psycho‑ + -manteia — divination of summoned spirits/mediums: mind-reading, fortune-telling.
Pyromancy — divination of reading embers or fire — pyromancy (πυρομαντεία)
Scatomancy — divination of excrement (feces). From Greek skato‑ (σκατό‑, "dung") + -mancy (‑μαντεία, "divination"). Methods: examining color, consistency, patterns, placement, or insects/animals attracted; used historically for omens about health, fertility, or future events.
Theomancy (θεομαντεία) — divination of perceived messages of a god
What do all of the -omancies have in common; i.e. the chief crux of the meaning common to all types of -mancies? It's clear from etymology: Greek -μαντεία refers to a "diviner"/"seer" mystically "divining/seeing/prophesying" esoteric messages via some kind of physical object"—physicomorphism!
